After the death of his mother he went to live with his maternal grandmother, Annie Ebensen in the small North Queensland town of Atherton. Peter Beattie, Premier of the State of Queensland, Australia, was born on November 18, 1952. He worked as a lawyer before becoming State Secretary of the Queensland Labor Party from 1981 to 1988.
